Cosmetic Eyelid Surgery Secrets

Dr. ZevonDon’t let excess eyelid skin and fat steal attention away from your sparkling eyes. In extreme cases, puffy or drooping eyelids can even partially obscure your vision. Cosmetic eyelid surgery — known as blepharoplasty — can correct these issues and give your whole face a refreshed appearance.

Cosmetic Eyelid Surgery Secrets

  • Eyelid surgery is not just for sagging upper eyelids. You know those pesky “bags” you’ve been carrying around under your eyes? Lower eyelid surgery can send them packing.
  • Eyelid surgery isn’t just for older people, either. Removing excess fat around and under your eyes smooths your skin, returning the focus to your eyes and other attractive facial features.
  • Some women of Asian heritage seek cosmetic eyelid surgery to add a crease to their upper eyelids. This surgery does not change your overall ethnic beauty.
  • Upper eyelid surgery scars can be concealed in the eyelid crease.
  • Lower eyelid surgery scars are unseen, as the surgical incisions are inside your lower eyelid.
  • If upper and lower lids are both giving you trouble, your New York plastic surgeon can perform upper and lower eyelid surgery at the same time.
  • Blepharoplasty is the second most common aesthetic facial surgery after rhinoplasty.
  • If you have health issues, let your plastic surgeon know. High blood pressure, thyroid problems, and other conditions can increase the risks involved with cosmetic eyelid surgery.
  • If you have a medical condition in which you don’t produce enough tears, you may not be a good candidate for the surgery.
  • The real secret to achieving great results from cosmetic eyelid surgery is to choose a board certified plastic surgeon who will listen to your wishes and who produces results you admire.

What Eyelid Surgery Doesn’t Do

  • Many people develop fine lines or crow’s feet at the outer corners of their eyes as they age. Eyelid surgery won’t correct these small wrinkles. Consider a skin resurfacing procedure or injectable.
  • Eyelid surgery does not lift drooping eyebrows. To address this problem, your New York plastic surgeon may suggest a brow lift or facelift with your eyelid lift.
  • If you have dark circles under your eyes, cosmetic eyelid surgery is unlikely to correct this. If the skin under your eyes is dark because of the shadow created by “bags” there, surgery can help, but some dark half-moons may still remain after surgery. During your consultation, an experienced plastic surgeon can give you a realistic assessment.

The Blepharoplasty Procedure

New York eyelid surgery starts with incisions designed to be concealed by the natural creases of your eyelids. Your plastic surgeon then removes or repositions the excess fat and tissue, removes excess skin, and tightens or trims the underlying muscles. The exact procedure depends on the results you hope to achieve. Afterward, the surgeon closes the incision with sutures.

After your surgery, you’ll likely experience some minor discomfort, irritation around the incisions, and swelling and bruising around your eyes during your recovery period. You will need several weeks to fully heal from the surgery. The results, though, last many years.
